The New 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison

The new new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison is looming on the horizon, as this anticipated pickup truck joins its Silverado counterpart in taking the ZR2 Bison badge. For this particular version, Chevy has stepped it up a notch or two, proving that the Colorado is truly a force to be reckoned with. What’s the most impressive thing about the newest edition of the Colorado? Its offroad prowess. 

Drivers all over, from Jamestown to Dunkirk are raving about the monstrous 35-inch wide 315/70R17, making it the only Chevy truck ever fitted with 35-inch mud tires directly from the factory – aside from its Silverado ZR2 Bison counterpart. These tires are so impressive that Chevrolet had to completely rearrange the front axle by over 3 inches forward, revamp the front fenders, and increase the tracks by about an inch in width. That finally gave the Colorado enough room to take on these huge off-road mud-slingers. So what else do we have to look forward to on the new Colorado? 

New Colorado ZR2 Bison Performance Preview

If you’re already salivating, calm down – we haven’t even made it past the tires yet. Equipped with AEV hardware, including a winch-ready front and rear bumper, in addition to 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, the exterior specs of the Colorado prove its off-road worthiness – and we’re thoroughly impressed. The real star of the show is the cutting-edge suspension. 

Equipped with a retuned Multimatic suspension system with jounce control dampers loaded in the front and rear, this system is what truly makes this Colorado a top contender for king of the traill. The control dampers lead to landings so soft over the highest obstacles you’d swear you barely hit a bump. In addition, the Colorado tested for the highest durability on some of the most unforgiving terrain despite the front and rear wheel travel being identical to a standard ZR2. However, the 1.5-inch ground clearance at 12.2 inches does wonders for the beating this truck can take, allowing it to pass over the highest obstacles with no chances of scraping or burning the chassis. But just for good measure, Boron steel skid plates and rocker protectors are installed to keep flying stones and debris from showering the underbody of your truck with any unforgiving debris. 

Performance and Towing: ZR2 Bison Power

There isn’t much to complain about regarding the 2.7-liter turbo 4-cylinder that yields 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. To round out the robust performance configuration, you’ll have an eight-speed auto gearbox paired with an AWD drivetrain, in addition to locking front and rear differentials. In other words, the Colorado ZR2 Bison was made for ofroad and towing glory. 

If that wasn’t enough to satisfy you, there’s also Baja mode. When engaged, the launch control feature automatically senses the road surface to give you the perfect amount of grip. How do you engage it? Press the brake pedal, mash the gas, and release the brake – dig in whether you’re in mud, dirt, rocks, grass, clay, or anything else your heart desires. Finally, the towing is capable of a strong 5,500 lbs paired with a payload of 1,050. But to make towing that much simpler, the Bison allows for a 38.2-degree approach angle, a 26-degree departure angle, and a 26.9-degree breakover angle, topping off the do-anything pedigree that comes with the Bison ZR2.
