What is Special About Ultium Batteries?

GM Ultium Battery

General Motors is committed to an all-electric future, with 30 new EVs expected to be released globally by 2025. By 2035, the only GM vehicles that are expected to still have tailpipes will be heavy-duty Chevy trucks. This environmentally conscious change is led by the new GM Ultium battery, which is poised to take the electric vehicle market to the next level. Find out more about how an Ultium battery works with the experts at Basil Chevrolet Inc. below!

What is the GM Ultium Battery?

So, what’s so special about Ultium batteries? More and more Jamestown and Westfield drivers are considering EVs. As a result, auto manufacturers like General Motors are developing technology to meet this rising demand, with cutting-edge models like the Bolt EV, Bolt EUV, and Hummer EV. These new GM electric vehicles feature a modular battery and drive unit combinations that are versatile enough to work a wide variety of cars, trucks, & SUVs. The GM Ultium battery is the linchpin in this design, allowing for denser energy transfers, lower projected costs, and increased EV ranges.

How Does an Ultium Battery Work?

The GM Ultium battery is constructed of flat cell pouches that can be stacked to improve range, power, and efficiency. Take a look at the Ultium EV battery specs for yourself to see how it can change your Dunkirk commute for the better:

  • Ultium packs are flexible enough to contain multiple combinations of modules to custom-tailor energy and range requirements. Your Buick or Chevy Ultium battery pack can house 6, 8, 10, 12, or up to 24 modules depending on what the vehicle type requires.
  • Since the GM Ultium EV battery’s electronic components are embedded within the modules, it can eliminate 80 percent of the battery pack wiring compared to conventional car batteries.
  • Stackable battery pouch cells enable flexible engineering and a more comfortable ride while adding 22 kWh of energy storage.
  • Ultium EV battery cells feature a state-of-the-art Nickel Cobalt Manganese Aluminum (NCMA) chemistry, designed to reduce the cobalt content by more than 70 percent.
  • The GM Ultium battery options scale from 50 kilowatt-hours to over 200 kWh, which will enable a GM-estimated range of 600 kilometers or more on a full charge.
  • Unlike traditional car batteries, the GM Ultium EV battery employs high-energy pouch cells that have a flat shape. This modular design allows GM engineers to optimize energy density and vehicle layout.
