TIRE SIDEWALL MARKINGS EXPLAINED

The sidewalls of tires feature a combination of letters and numbers that describe the tire size in detail.

The series of characters typically begins with a “P,” which denotes a passenger car. An “LT” signifies a light truck. A three-digit number follows the letter and represents the width of the tire in millimeters. The next two-digit number represents the ratio between the sidewall and the tire’s width. The letter W, Y or Z following the numbers denotes the speed rating of the tire.

The next letter explains the tire’s construction. For example, “R” stands for radial tires. The two-digit number that follows represents the size in inches of the wheel itself. The next two digits stand for the maximum load of each tire. The final letter indicates the maximum speed rating.
